[ Flânerie Boathouse ]

Flânerie (adj.): A French term of wandering aimlessly through a space for the purpose of observing the environment. Flânerie Boathouse explores the relationship between architecture, topography, and water management on the shores of Lake Thunderbird in Norman, Oklahoma. By reshaping the site's existing contours through architectural swales, the building and landscape operate as one interconnected system. A meandering pedestrian path gradually reveals the boathouse, while two asymmetrical triangular volumes separate public gathering from boating operations. An elevated café frames views of the lake, while a protected central canal allows visitors to safely launch kayaks and canoes. Together, the architecture and topography operate as one cohesive system, creating an immersive environment where movement, recreation, and ecological awareness are one. [ Fall 2025 ]
